This is a low-mileage JDM FB25 2.5L DOHC 4-cylinder engine imported directly from Japan, with approximately 50,000 to 75,000 miles. It fits the 2013-2014 Subaru Outback and 2013-2014 Subaru Legacy. Every unit is compression checked and inspected before it leaves our warehouse in Belleville, NJ.

Why Owners Replace the FB25

The FB25 in the 2013-2014 Outback and Legacy has a well-known reputation for oil consumption. Owners typically notice it as the oil level dropping well before the next scheduled change, a low-oil light that keeps returning, or fouled plugs and a misfire code that comes back after a tune-up. Left alone long enough, it progresses to ring and cylinder wear that a top-end service will not fix.

At that point there are three options: rebuild the original engine, buy a remanufactured long block, or install a low-mileage import. Japanese-market cars come out of service at far lower mileage than comparable US-market vehicles because of Japan’s inspection regime, which is why a JDM unit with 50,000-75,000 miles costs a fraction of the alternatives.

Before You Install

Read this before your shop starts. It is the difference between a swap that lasts and a warranty claim.

1. Verify sensor and accessory compatibility first. JDM and US-market configurations can differ. Have your installer compare the incoming engine against your original before the old one comes out, and plan to transfer anything that does not match.
2. Replace the wear items while access is easy. Spark plugs, valve cover gaskets, thermostat, water pump, and the accessory drive belt are all far cheaper to do on the bench than after the engine is in the bay.
3. Use a certified mechanic. Installation must be performed by a certified mechanic within the warranty period. Self-installs and installs by uncertified parties void coverage.
4. Prime the oil system before first start. Fill with fresh oil and a new filter, then crank with the ignition disabled until oil pressure registers. Never fire a freshly installed engine dry.
5. Check before you button up. Confirm no leaks, coolant filled and burped of air, and oil pressure at idle before the car goes on the road.

This engine carries a 90-day start-up warranty on internal moving components of the head(s) and block only, beginning from the delivery date. Manifolds, fuel rails, sensors, pumps, external accessories, and labor are not covered. See the Warranty tab for full terms.

Shipped by freight from our Belleville, NJ warehouse, typically 2-10 business days. Residential orders route to the nearest freight terminal for pickup; commercial addresses with a loading dock receive direct delivery. All deliveries are curbside, so arrange a forklift or engine hoist in advance. Inspect the shipment before signing the delivery receipt and note any damage on the receipt at the time of delivery — without that notation a freight claim is very difficult to pursue. Shipping is calculated at checkout based on your delivery address.

What will my mechanic need to transfer from my old engine?

Less than most people expect, since the intake manifold, injectors, coils, and alternator are already on it. Your installer will still move over remaining accessories, brackets, and any sensors that differ between JDM and US-market configuration. Have them compare the two engines side by side before the old one comes out.

Do I need to worry about sensor differences?

Have your mechanic verify sensor compatibility against your original engine before installation. This is a professional shop job, not a driveway swap.

Does the FB25 use a timing belt or a timing chain?

A timing chain. There is no timing belt service interval to plan around, unlike the older EJ-series engines.

Why is my Subaru burning oil?
